FEBRUARY (Subat, shoo-BAHT)

Rainy, chilly and cheerless, but there's skiing on Mount Uludag near Bursa, Mount Erciyes near Kayseri, and Palandöken near Erzurum.

In Istanbul and the other big cities, museums may be redoing some of their exhibits, some small hotels may be closed for renovations, but there will be plenty that's open and good to see and do. And there will be no crowds!

The tourist crowds are light. Very light.

February is forbiddingly cold, snowy and icy in eastern Turkey, but it's not a bad month to visit the Southeast, which is chilly now but blazing hot in summer.

The Islamic minor festival of Mevlid-i Nebi, celebrating the Prophet Muhammed's birthday, falls in February in 2010, 2011, and 2012. More...
