There's a good train-ferry connection between Izmir and Istanbul, and useful services run between Izmir's Basmane Station and Ankara.

For several years, all trains that normally run south from Izmir (Basmane) to Adnan Menderes Airport, Selçuk (for Ephesus), Aydin and Denizli (for Pamukkale) were not running due to upgrandes of the track.

As of late 2009, there is good news. New railcars are running on this line south from Izmir as far as Aydin. This is great news for anyone wanting to travel quickly, comfortably and cheaply between Izmir, Adnan Menderes Airport, and Selçuk (Ephesus).

There are only four trains daily now, but there may be more—and faster—in 2010.

IZMIR-ISTANBUL TRAIN-FERRY
The 6 Eylül Ekspresi departs Izmir (Basmane) mid-afternoon daily, and travels to Bandirma, where you transfer to a fast ferry for Istanbul (Yenikapi). The 17 Eylül Ekspresi also runs between Izmir and Bandirma. More...

IZMIR-ANKARA TRAINS
All express trains on the Izmir-Ankara route are overnight trains taking from 13 to 15 hours to make the run.

The best train between Izmir and Ankara is the overnight 9 Eylül Ekspresi (September 9th Express), hauling Pullman cars, a sleeping car and a dining car.

Next best is the earlier Izmir Mavi Tren, with the same sorts of cars.

The Karesi Ekspresi is a slower, lower-fare overnight train with Pullman cars, a couchette car and a dining car.
