A tidy guesthouse
double
bedroom.

The Antique Hostel &
Guesthouse on
Kutlugün
Sokak in Sultanahmet,
Istanbul (map)
has a lot of advantages:
— The single and double
guest rooms, though smallish and simple,
are quite
comfortable, with all the services
of a more expensive hotel: newly-renovated,
fully-tiled private bathrooms,
central heating, air
conditioning,
even a TV in each room!
— Some east-facing rooms have
fine Bosphorus views because
of the hostel's position at the top
of the hillside—views you would pay
hundreds of liras for in a fancy hotel.
— For the very thrifty, the three
dorm rooms in the basement
sleep from four to six people. They're
tidy,
cheery, air-conditioned
and quite
cheap,
sharing two
clean bathrooms and a separate toilet.
— The enclosed, recently renovated
and upgraded rooftop
cafe-bar-restaurant has spectacular
views of the Bosphorus and
Sea
of Marmara, and the open-air
terrace above it has even
better views!
—Your stay here includes an open
buffet breakfast, including
corn flakes, eggs, white sheeps'-milk
cheese (beyaz peynir, feta),
yellow kashar cheese, butter, honey,
salami, sliced cucumbers, sliced
tomatoes, green and black olives,
and unlimited quantities of Turkish
tea, apple tea, orange tea, coffee,
milk and bread.
— Kutlugün
Sokak is a
quiet street, and
this part of it is particularly
quiet, with barely any traffic at all,
and yet you're literally just
around the corner from the Blue
Mosque and the Hippodrome,
and only a few minutes' walk from
Topkapi
Palace.

Hostel guests enjoy
an evening waterpipe on the
terrace.
It's also comforting that Mr
Hilmi Efendioglu, owner-manager of the hostel,
is a longtime resident of this neighborhood.
In fact, the hostel was for years his
family home: he was born in this building,
as was his father before him!
If it weren't for the thrifty dorm
rooms, which allow budget travelers
to sleep within sight of the sultan's
palace for an astoundingly small
sum, I'd call the Antique Hostel not
a hostel at all, but a good small hotel.
(Hilmi Bey prefers "guesthouse.")
Whatever we call it, you will
be happy to call it home while
you're in Istanbul.
If it's full, you have an alternative:
the nearby Nobel
Hostel, operated by the
same people.
When you contact the Antique
Hostel & Guesthouse or
Nobel
Hostel, be
sure to mention
TTP. Here's why.
