My friend Mr Dore Stein, host of the Tangents radio show on station KALW (91.7 FM), San Francisco, California, and Mondomix.com (scroll down to "Tangents"), leads a music tour like no other to Turkey.

In keeping with his "Tangents" radio show philosophy of offering "genre-bending radio that explores the bridges connecting diverse musical styles including world and roots music, and creative jazz hybrids," Dore identifies a wish-list of artists from the most interesting corners of the Turkish and international music scene and is remarkably successful at booking them for his tour.

The 16-night tour starts in Istanbul on May 2, 2008, and ends in Istanbul on May 18th. You'll visit Istanbul, Cappadocia, Konya, Afyon, Pamukkale, Ephesus and Sirince.

Most evenings feature live performances, especially those in Istanbul, and there's a special concert in a 2000-year-old cave church in Cappadocia.

The group is limited to 16 travelers and past tours have sold out, so reserve as soon as possible.

Although many participants come from the San Francisco Bay area, the tour is open to all interested travelers from anywhere in the world. British and European travelers can benefit from the weak dollar and less expensive flights to Turkey.

The spring 2008 tour fee is US$3900. The tour fee does not include international air travel. Airfare costs approximately US$900 to $1300 from the USA, depending on point of departure and when you purchase your ticket. Flying from North America, you should depart at least one day before the tour starting date in order to reach Istanbul for the start of the tour.

Itinerary at a Glance
Dore (DOH-ree) Stein writes: "We travel like locals when in the heart of Istanbul. We experience crammed trams, the joy of eating in neighborhood restaurants, and exhilarating nightlife. We soak up the aroma of Istanbul through full cultural immersion. Evenings in Istanbul feature live performances from the cream of the Turkish music scene that reflect its rich diversity.

The 2007 music line-up couldn't have been better:

Sabahat Akkiraz - This enchanting folk singer was Dore's number one choice for the 2007 tour. The spring '08 tour may include a private performance at Sabahat's house and a home cooked meal prepared by the Akkiraz family.

Selim Sesler - Turkey's top Roma (Gypsy) clarinetist who starred in the film "Crossing the Bridge: The Sound Of Istanbul."

Okay Temiz - legendary Turkish jazz drummer, percussionist, and instrument inventor who pioneered creative world jazz fusions with Don Cherry. The 2008 tour may include Okay doing a demonstration at his one-of-a-kind studio, and overseeing a tour group practice session.

Hüsnü Senlendirici - Former leader/clarinetist in the legendary Turkish Roma jazz band, "Laço Tayfa", Hüsnü's solo career has exploded. He has become one of the biggest stars in Turkish music and even has his own television show. The Tangents tour saw Hüsnü with his new group: The Taqsim Trio.

The 2008 tour will be a mix of previous tour artists such as Okay Temiz and Sabahat Akkiraz, along with new ones.

One repeat music event that is a certain highlight is Istanbul's Roma (Gypsy) street party known as the Hidrellez Spring Festival. The Tangents Tour also attends a whirling dervish ceremony in Istanbul, and later, in Konya, the tomb of Rumi at the Mevlana Museum.

In addition to nightly concerts, activities include visits to musical instrument shops in the Tünel neighborhood of Beyoglu, and to the home of Istanbul's foremost traditional instrument builder. His home is an instrument museum!

The Tangents tour also visits a complex where the entire Turkish record industry is located - and CDs are sold wholesale.

The tour takes you on a Bosphorus cruise, and an unusual tour of the historic Genoese neighborhood, as well as unmissable sights such as Aya Sofya and Topkapi Palace, including its unforgettable Harem.

Other traditional arts aren't neglected: you'll see famous Turkish tiles in the Harem, and also in the exquisite Rüstem Pasa Mosque.

The Tangents tour flies to Cappadocia, visiting Kaymakli Underground City, the gorgeous Ihlara Valley, and Göreme Open-Air Museum. We'll also enjoy a candlelight cave concert.

Travelling west to the charming Aegean hill village of Sirince, there is a guided tour of  the remarkably well preserved ancient city of Ephesus. We'll also visit the calcium travertine wonders of Pamukkale and the extensive ruins of Hieropolis.

Tangents Turkey Tour leader Dore Stein states: "Professionals in the music and travel industries tell me the Tangential Turkey Tour is one-of-a-kind. There is simply no other tour that organizes concerts with Turkish artists for Westerners. I am proud and honored to be able to produce this."
