The overnight Dokuz
Eylül Ekspresi (doh-KOOZ
ehy-LEWL, "September
9th Express") departs Ankara and Izmir (Basmane)
each evening at 20:00 (8 pm) and
arrives in the opposite city about
13-1/2 hours later, between 09:00
(9 am) and 09:30 (9:30 am).
This super-express train hauls Pullman cars,
a sleeping car,
and a dining car.
A one-way/single ticket costs
YTL25
in a Pullman seat.
For private sleeping
car compartments,
the total fare (bed + train fare) is
YTL75
for a single person in a private compartment,
or YTL50 per
person if two people share
a compartment.
If you'd rather leave earlier, look
at the Izmir
Mavi Tren. For
a slower, lower-fare night train hauling
Pullman cars and a couchette
car, there's
the Karesi
Ekspresi.
It's best to reserve
your seat or bed in advance,
particularly if you want a sleeping
compartment. Please also read this
safety notice about sleeping car
travel.
The 9 Eylül Ekspresi train
is named in honor of the date (September
9, 1922, on which Izmir
was liberated from
foreign occupation during
Turkey's War of Independence.
The liberation of Izmir,
through which port Greek invasion forces
had penetrated
Anatolia, also meant an end to the
war and ultimate victory for Mustafa
Kemal [Atatürk]'s
republican armed forces, a milestone
on the way to the end of the Ottoman
Empire and the proclamation (1923)
of the
Turkish
Republic.
