Re: Living in Turkey

Alicia, Advise you to dress normal western clothes...just like NY, LA, Chicago. For work...same as you would here teaching ESL or any classroom (modest..business casual). Weekends is same...jeans, sweatshirts in winter....jeans or capris pants, shorts ( not too short) in summer with T-shirts. Ankara...

Hello, Turkey is not as address orintated as I/we are. It may/may not have and actual address. Suggest you do as the locals do---> Hop a ferry from Besiktas/Uskudar Ferry Dock, walk in a little & ask a cab driver to point the area out for you. S/b easy from there. davcamp http://web.mac.com/dav_camp...

Re: shoe-shine scam?

It is a scam...I usually avoid shoeshiners by wearing flip-flops in the summer and gymnshoes in winter.

Re: Local Hamam in Istanbul

Hello John, The Turkish language has no repeating characters, so, 'hamam' with one 'm' is accurate. Plural would be 'hamamlar.' Consider that the Turkish culture is not as time, event, punctual, detail oriented as we Westerners are. That is why a website with info may be posted one day, and gone the...

Hello, If you are able to buy ahead of time...at least one day, that would be ideal. If you will be in Istanbul beforehand that is? Otherwise, Arrive 2-3 hours before hand and buy at Haydarpasha Station. While there snap a few photos of the station's beautiful architecture! Also, step out and walk 1...

Re: Local Hamam in Istanbul

Hello, There are so many hammas in Istanbul - if you were blind you would run into one in a matter of a few steps! :-) Stay away from ones in Sultanahmet - price gougers galore. Suggest you follow tram rail line downhill and seek one there. There is a tourist pavilion (English) 100 yards south of Su...

From there take a 10 minute cab ride to hotel of conference for about 7YTL. Suggest if you have time...

Hello, Usually on OCt. 29 businesses are all open...there is a minute of silence when all traffic, noise, etc stops but resumes right away. You should check website for musems to see if they are closed as normally on a given weekday...e.g., noramlly each museum is closed a business day per week on n...

Re: Photographic equipment in IST?

Yes, There is a huge photo/camera section there. Take a Bus to Besiktas and on the south westen portion on the main intersection find the McDonalds restaurant visible from the main road. Walk past the restaurant on the right side and you'll find all the camera shops in about 2 minutes. If you need h...
