It's about 340km from Selçuk to Assos, Pergamon is half way between the two. To get to Sardis and look around would add at least 3 hours to the journey.
Say 1 hour to look round Assos, the harbour there is a nice place to stay. And there are pensions in Behramkale itself, e.g. Eris Pansiyon and Sidar Pension.
In fact there are plenty of places to stay around Assos.

See that David...has replied..just to add a few comments ...we did drive last year from Selcuk ( mid afternoon after visiting Ephesus ) to Pergamon and then on to Assos arriving at night...if you leave Selcuk early in the day it would be better for you...

Did you see my post ''Ideas for Selcuk-Bergama-Assos-Ayvalik-Troy-Canakkale'' It might be helpful.
viewtopic.php?f=16&t=3332

if you do go to Bergama ( pergamon )...you will need close to a full day there to see everything...we only saw the Arcropolis...and missed visiting the Red castle, museum and also the middle ruins...will have to go back for more :=))

Also David is about right only an hour or so to visit the ruins at the top...but it is a very good walk up-hill have good walking shoes..you will need them..

here are my photos..just click on the folders for the areas..

Enjoy your trip and you are right..Turkey cannot be done in one trip alone :=))

LOL, if you're talking about Assos, I just rode my motorbike up through the village to the entrance at the top (strangely followed by the local police car!).

We really should move this thread into 'Tours and Itineraries:!! but seeing as we all seem to be into planning travelbug's trip here, I just have a small spanner to throw into the mix and would love to hear what you experts think of this minor adjustment?

What about Leaving Aphrodisias and driving to Bafa Gol for one night rather than Selcuk? Nearer for visits to Didyma etc? Then going on to Selcuk for seeing Ephesus. We will be doing the journey in the other direction after we have spent two nights at Bafa Gol (it's all Carrie's fault, after your trip last spring!!) 24/25 May. Then driving to Aphrodisias. Still after ideas for the best route? Main road via Aydin to Kuyucak or via Milas, Mugla and Tavas.

I am certainly open to these great suggestions. My biggest problem is not having a good map in advance. I'm a bit confused over the geography and distances from place to place. I've asked previously on another thread - does anyone know where I can get a good road map of Turkey?

Another question - does anyone have recommendations on where the best 1 day gullet rides are out of? Should we do it out of Fethiye or is there a better place? Is the 12 island gullet out of Fethiya?

Thanks again and please keep the advise coming! - June (Travelbug)

Hi June...

A friend of mind recommended the plastic fold up on they bought on amazon...Insight map.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Turkey-Insight- ... 9812343830

As for day boat trips you can do that in either Fethiye or Cirali...or both if you have the time..or from Kas or Denre to see the sunken city of Simena..all are worthwhile

also for your travel times and distances..I have listed a few..but in the pages of the turkey Travel planner you can also find out these distances for each location...under the heading ''Distances & Travel Times or transportation''..If you're driving your own car and you don't make lots of stops, you may cover these distances in less time. All aprroximate times and depending on road conditions..

Bergama ( Pergamon ) & Izmir = 110 Km
Izmir-Selcuk (Ephesus) 75 km
Selçuk - Didim (DIDYMA) 105 km
Selçuk - Bodrum 197 km
Selçuk - Aphrodisias 150 km
Selçuk - Denizli 175 km
Selçuk - Pamukkale 195 km

Selçuk - Çanakkale 408 km
Selçuk - ISTANBUL 680 km
Selçuk - Fethiye 348 km

Konya to........

Afyon: 223 km (139 miles) W, 3.5 hours
Aksaray: 140 km (87 miles) W, 2.5 hours
Ankara: 260 km (162 miles) N, 3.5 hours
Beysehir: 77 km (48 miles) W, 1.25 hours
Cappadocia (Ürgüp): 235 km (146 miles) E, 3 hours
Antalya: 365 km (227 miles) SW, 5.5 hours

travel times from Ankara.....
http://www.turkeytravelplanner.com/go/C ... ances.html
Cappadocia: 300 km (186 miles) SE

Travel times from Canakkale

hope this helps 8)

Hi again. David & Carrie - please let me know what you think of Margaret's suggestion of staying at Bafa Gol. Any other suggestions are always appreciated! Carrie - We may end up at the Hotel Canada somewhere along the way. Will you be there around our anticipated arrival? We don't want to book a room in advance as we want maximum flexibility, however, the reviews on this board are all so wonderful - so we will try to get in if there is availability.

That's a tricky one, I'm sure you'd love Bafa Gölü and the ruins of Heracleia there, it's a tranquil spot, and I see you've got 4 nights at Selçuk (more than at any other place), so, yes, it makes sense. And the following day it's any easy run up to Selçuk via Miletus and Priene (and Didyma if you like). The only negative is the added distance - from Aphrodisias to Bafa via Tavas and Muğla is 250km (Selçuk is 100km less), but you would be saving yourself that day trip to those sites. And that road looks great on my map - it's got a green "scenic route" line all along it!
P.S. Re maps, I use a Freytag & Berndt and an old ADAC as well (to get some sort of consensus - especially with ancient sites' positions), I've got a feeling that the Ryborsch Verlag ones are probably the best, but I can't seem to be able to obtain their No. 2 map (west coast).

Hi June.....sorry for the late reply...but was away in Cirali over this past weekend..As for your question...there were only a few small pansiyons we noticed on our trip and passing through Bafa Lake last year...we did not stay just passed through admiring the scenery...

As for Cirali in Jun 03 or around there...by your dates..and it is a week day so my kids would still be in school for those dates..our children attend school until June 12..or so....so I will be in Cirali after that time for 3 months until mid-Sept...sorry I cannot promise that I myself would be there but my husband will be and he ( my better - half - Saban ) always takes good care of everyone.. you can always send me an email or even call direct to the hotel...
