Izmir Airport to Selcuk

Post by Ali Asterisk » Thu Aug 13, 2009 10:10 pm

Hi

I am assuming that the new trains are now running on the upgraded track and wonder if anyone has the timetable?

I will be arriving at Izmir airport at 20.05 in a couple of weeks and am hoping to catch a train straight to Selcuk.

Many thanks

Looks like the last train is at 19:30. There used to be a Göller Ekspres that departed at 21:30ish but it seems to have disappeared (probably because it can no longer reach the göller because of the rail works east of Aydın).

Many thanks for the information

I was rather hoping that the 21.30 from Izmir would stop at the airport but I guess not!!!

I shall just have to save the airport to Selcuk train journey for another time

Hello,
Best way is - Take a 2 minute taxi to the main road off the airport, then, take a Dolmus (Mini-bus) for 50 minutes at price of 8YTL to Selcuk. From Selcuk you can easily connect with another mini-bus for an 8 minutes ride to Ephesus at 4YTL.

There is now an improved rail service from Izmir Airport to Selçuk but it is not frequent with only 4 or 5 trains a day. It used to take more than an hour but it is less than 1 hour now. There are also a lot of trains from the city centre to the airport (20 minutes) now the work on the railway has been completed.
I'll find the times and post those too, but the times change often.

The times are here - not a great deal of choice on trains to Selçuk but if you can get there at the right time it is by far the easiest way, and definitely the cheapest. It is also the cheapest and probably the fastest way into Izmir if the times are right. The trains are brand new and fast, but may be crowded.

My English friend - an experienced Turkey travel guide - tried to get a taxi to the dolmuş stop for Selçuk last year, but got stuck when the taxi drivers refused to drop him there and he ended up spending a small fortune paying a taxi to take him all the way to Selçuk.

I arrived there a couple of weeks ago armed with both the info from this page and knowledge of my friend's previous problem with unco-operative taxis. I asked a Havaş driver how I could get to Selçuk and he informed me that walking to the dolmuş stop was NOT an option: very dangerous roads - no walk ways. A helpful Turkish woman told me I should get a taxi to Gaziemir ("GARzee-EM-eer") so I explained the trouble my friend had had in getting a taxi to drop him there the previous year. She, bless her, was heading the same way, and hailed taxis for us both. The first three refused to go there. The fourth agreed. She got out just before the dolmuş stop and gave me 5 lira as half the fare.

The dolmuş stop is on the road by a car parking space. I only had to wait a few minutes for a dolmuş to come along.

If you want to ask in Turkish for a taxi to go to Gaziemir for the Selçuk dolmuş you could make yourself understood by saying, "Gaziemir Selçuk dulmuş ("doll MUHSH") durak ("duhrack"), lütfen" (Gaziemir Selçuk minibus bus stop, please) or, more grammatically, "Gaziemir'e gitmek istiyorum. Selçuğa giden dolmuş durağa, lütfen"

Lily,
Thanks for your story. I have heard this sort before and it is true. Along with that I will share that I had a good experience 2 yrs ago. From Izmir airport at lower level of airport the taxi dispatcher called a cab for us to bring to the main road for dolmus. It was helped to announce to dispatcher (before we got into the cab) that we were headed to main road only. They of course offered a ride all the way to Selcuk at which we replied that because of car illness history I was not able to endure and hour ride. They politely yielded and a pleasant driver took us to the main road (5 minutes) and we gave him a nice tip. He pointed to the spot to wait for Dolmus.

I walked to the dolmuş stop but yes, it does involve a bit of clambering up a bank (or possibly a long walk on a sliproad) as far as I remember and over a crash barrier, and although it is not designed for walking, I wouldn't say it was terribly dangerous; another time I walked with my relatives from the dolmuş stop to the airport and it wasnt so bad (it is harder going from the airport to the dolmuş stop, because then you have to get to the other side of the road). But really try and get the train if you can, as it only takes 45-50 minutes from the airport to selçuk directly, and it may be better to wait for the next train in an hour than to worry about using a taxi to Gaziemir; it took me 20 minutes to walk to the dolmuş stop and I waited there for another 20 minutes, and the trip took 1 hour to Selçuk. If they ask you where you are going and you say selçuk, you're finished :)

Selcuk to Izmir airport for 7am flight

Post by bearteacher » Sun Sep 18, 2011 3:35 pm

Is it possible to take a minibus from Selcuk to Gaziemir in the early morning about 5 am? (with drop-off at the road-side bus stop closest to ADB then taxi to the terminal)
I will take 7AM flight fom ADB.

I asked my hotel in Selcuk to provide airport transfer to ADB on that early morning and it costs 45 euro. I hesitate to move to Izmir city hotel (airport hotel chage 60-80 euro per night!)one night before.

Thanks for your help in advance.
