Are trains from north or west running to Syria nowadays?

Post by Geoff » Mon Nov 09, 2009 12:58 pm

Dear All,

After reading on
http://www.seat61.com/Syria.htm#Istanbu ... ia%20Adana
that the services were not running I wrote to TCDD asking when they would resume, but received no reply.

Anyway we decided not to go this year so I will not chase it up now. But, having never visited Syria before, it looks an interesting journey maybe for next year so if anyone has been this autumn or winter I would be interested to hear your experience.

Regards

Geoff

As far as I am aware, at the moment the only train to Syria is the overnight Mersin-Adana-Aleppo service.

Hi Geoff

I leave for Istanbul this saturday (9th Jan), get the overnight train Istanbul to Adana on sunday night and then shall wiggle my way, by hook or by crook, into Syria (probably using buses via Antakya). I will look at the train option whilst there too but think the Adana-Aleppo train only runs twice a week and I want to have as much time in Syria as possible this trip so can't wait for the train.

I shall make notes and report back!

Happy planning!

PS - Despite what people say, I managed to book (and pay for) the overnight sleeper on TCDD website and now just have to pick the tickets up from a train station when I arrive in Turkey - fingers crossed it has worked!!! :D

:D Result! (As some might say.) In this cold and miserable January, this is cheering news! Good luck!

Thanks Bill.

I shall make notes and post anything relevant up here! I know TCDD have taken the money out cos the credit card company rang me to check it was my purchase!

It's a shame that discussion of Syria is off-topic here. Combined Turkey-Syria holidays are getting more popular.

High on my list of to do with my motorbike (take advantage of the Turkish 90 day tourist visa and 6 month vehicle visa!).

Ali,

Please could you post a link to the TCDD page that worked for you? Thanks.

Quick update - getting the train tickets worked like a dream!! Went down to Sirkeci ticket office, gave the office my ticket numbers and they printed them just like that. Could not have been easier.

Bill, I'm assuming you wont need that info for the next couple of weeks - can I do it when I get back pls? Internet connection isn't great here and I'll try and replicate what I did and give you proper instructions!!

Syria here we come!

Happy plotting everyone

Ali

That's fine, Ali; there's no hurry at all. You take your time and have a great holiday. You've picked the right time to go, what with all the snow here (though they do sometimes see snow on the Turco-Syrian border, I'm told).
