HELP! HONEYMOON, RAINING IN ISTANBUL

Post by Newbride » Thu Apr 24, 2008 4:04 pm

This is very last minute, I know. I'm leaving for my honeymoon in Turkey this evening, and of course we noticed that it's supposed to be raining all the days we're in Istanbul. I want to stay positive about it, and it would help if anyone has ideas of things that are still fun to do in Istanbul in the rain. Is the rain there usually really heavy, or just intermittant showers this time of year?

I had planned on wearing sandals in Istanbul, but is that a really bad idea this time of year? I'm definitely packing my raincoat...but didn't know if boots were necessary. It's colder than I thought it would be. We're going to Cappadocia and the Medit. coast later...it's a little tough to pack one carry-on bag that covers all the climates and activies...

Any thoughts, anecdotes, or advice would be great.

Hello,
My wife has been in Istanbul (Immigration paperwork pending) since last Fall. I talk with her several times per day and she says although it rains (on days when it does), it usually clears up within same day. There are many things to do when it rains...look here for my museum ideas.

One of my most favorite days I remember in Istanbul was a rainy day I spent visiting landmamark Mosques and Byzantine churches while ducking into tea gardens and restuarants in between.
As for flip flops...that is what I ususally wear in Istanbul, but usually also pack a pair of gymn shoes (Converse or Nike e.g.) for wetter days.

This is a late answer but I cannot stop telling it. There is a Turkish proverb
"If two loves each other even a hay-house is a paradise"
:D
I wish you a long and a happy life on the same pillow and bed.

I waited for Tosun to answer your question but since there seems to be no response here is the original of the Turkish proverb.

"İki gönül bir olunca samanlık seyran olur"

It must be quite infuriating and disappointing to find out that your travel destination will be hit by bad weather. I hate it when that happens to me and I have to be stuck in the hotels. For Istanbul, there are museums and places of worship that you can visit, but the choices are usually limited by their proximity to your hotel.
