Republic day (Cumhuriyet Bayrami)

Post by cordy69 » Tue Oct 21, 2008 11:37 am

Dear all,
I know, that October 29 is Republic day (Cumhuriyet Bayrami). I will be Istanbul at that time. What will be closed? Will museums work on Oct.28-29? Is it a bad idea to go to the islands on 28-29 oct? Anything else I should have in mind?
Any help appreciated.

Hello,
Usually on OCt. 29 businesses are all open...there is a minute of silence when all traffic, noise, etc stops but resumes right away. You should check website for musems to see if they are closed as normally on a given weekday...e.g., noramlly each museum is closed a business day per week on normal basis. It is good to call ahead of your visit once you arrive in Turkey as they have a method random closings w/o notice, if they choose. Example; I went to Yildiz Chalet Palace on a normally scheduled open day - we walked 30 minutes UPHILL only to learn it was closed. There were no signs posted anywhere. would have been nice to have one at the street level entrance before we climbed all the way up. :-)

Suggestion...go to museum website and get a telephone number to call in morning of the day you plan to visit. If you do not speak Turksih - have your hotel front desk call for you.

Safe Travels,

One thing for sure is that all banks and government offices will be closed but I cannot see it affecting you and your plans..

all offical government offices, private work places and educational facilities will be closed for the national holiday...the day prior some places will being the holiday at 1:00 pm...

so in all respects it will be like a Saturday...

On average most museums are usually closed on a Monday ( however check the below link for opening and closing times and days ) but I cannot say for sure if they close on the National Holiday..davcamp1 has given you a great answer and have your hotel call on your behalf...if it is closed then there are still plenty of things for you to do or see..

According to the article 18 of the Regulations of Turkish Museums regulated by Turkish Ministry of Tourism and Culture all museums are open within working hours even at National Holidays like Cumhuriyet Bayrami. :D :D
Only the 1st day of religious holidays they are closed till noon.
Only on mondays they are closed for cleaning. Topkapi on thusday.
All mosques are open for visitors.

On 29th the traffic will be very heavy because of the army and school childrens parade on Aksaray. If you like you can also be one of the spectators of the parade.

Surely you can have the trip to islands. All the ferry and privat boats, tram, train, bus ect work on 29th. Only offices, schools are closed.

"a minute of silence " is only on Nov. 10th. The day that Ataturk passed away in 1938. Since that time the sirens cry and we all stand silent before his immortal memory. There are also some fundamentalist ******'s who dont do that.
Have a nice time
Don't die before visiting Turkey

Thanks for all the info, but I have one question left - will the trafic be heavy on 29th if I decide to go to the islands? I know that its pretty busy on week-ends...
By the way - where exactly this parade will be? I would like to go and take some pictures :)
