Tulips in April

Post by julievida » Tue Jul 23, 2013 7:50 pm

I am holding flights now arriving into Istanbul on April 26 evening so soonest we could see the tulips would be morning of April 27 (2014). Will the tulips be pretty much done by then?? We will be in Turkey 1 month so thought April 26-May 26 we could use the extra day for Memorial Day. Otherwise we could move up the dates to maybe April 19-May 19 but then lose a day.
We plan on doing lots of hiking and seeing the sights all by public transportation around the country.
Thanks for your help!!!

Istanbul's annual Tulip Festival is during the month of April. This means the city will be actively tending the beds and making sure there's lots to look at.

After April, there will probably still be many flowers for a week or more, but a lot depends on weather: a few heavy storms (and April is traditionally a rainy-ish month) and many of the petals might be knocked down.

In short, arriving earlier in April is better.

Have a great trip!

Thanks Tom for your quick message!
We were able to move up our flts a week earlier arriving April 19 so should be set now for the tulips!
Thanks again and looking forward to using this site to help plan our trip. Julie

Two years ago the meadows around Nemrut Dag were full of wild tulips at the beginning of May. Last year at the same time they were under six foot of snow! We have often seen wild tulips when hiking in Turkey in the Spring.

Reminds me of seeing wild irises by the streams in eastern Turkey, and autumn crocuses at Sumela on the eastern Black Sea coast.

You don't have to go to distant eastern Turkey to see wonderful wildflowers. Right now, throughout the Aegean, there are 2-meter tall thistles with brilliant blue flowers. Very impressive!

What wonderful memories....

I was in Istanbul in April(26th-30th), there definitey were many tulips, but it wasn't exactly a LOT. I guess mid april would be better. But then end April has more clear weather, and there were a lot other flowers too, Afrodisias was beautiful, so was Cappadocia(in 1st 2 weeks of May).

Every year is different, of course. We're talking about the weather!

And...in an age of climate change....

Another fine April floral sight in Turkey: the cherry-tree orchards around Akhisar in bloom, and "snowstorms" of pink petals blowing in an April breeze. :D
