Bafa Gölü

Post by David Morgan » Sun Sep 02, 2007 3:40 pm

I've discovered there are a couple of pensions on Lake Bafa:

Worth knowing, I thought. Nice place to relax or hike.

This looks like an ideal spot for a stopover on our spring 2008 trip!! Had already pencilled in a Lake Bafa visit after it last came up on the forum. Perhaps I should just leave you experts to plan on our behalf!!! :D

Many thanks

You must be a mind reader!!
Have just booked our outwards flight to Istanbul for May, we will spend a couple of days exploring things we couldn't fit into our last visit, then we hire a car (at the airport, so we don't have to drive in the city!) and proceed towards Gelibolu. Then we will drive to Troy. Question Where best to stay overnight? as I presume that with our drive from Istanbul and visiting the battle sites that is a full day. I gather that we will not be over impressed with Troy, but can't possibly drive past without a visit!! Thinking that Assos sounds nice for our next night stop and somewhere around Bergama for the following night. I have to be a bit careful with my other half, as he is not quite such a ruin fanatic as me!! luckily, the great scenery and picturesque overnight stop offs usually keep him happy. Bafa is the plan for the next night (we have already visited Efes) but I want to see Priene and Milet. Will make sure we get to the caves and the other sights around the lake, should we have a second night at Bafa? After that we have to head towards Afrodisias. Not sure what route to take? don't seem many alternatives from the map (too many mountains in the way!!) D330/D550/D330 to Tavas seems best. Would like to think we can also fit in the wonderful underground travertines David discovered while we are in the area. Our last nght out will need to be around Denizli, so I can see a re-visit to Ibrahim, Karen and Venus coming up! Then home to our Calis bolthole ( won't have been in residence for over six months! hope the winter has been kind, but guess who will be spending the following six weeks battling with the weeds!!).

All constructive ideas for our trip will be gratefully received, I'm going to spend the next few weeks trawling through old postings on the forum to fill out the itinery.

I stayed at the Yildiz Saray Harbour Hotel at Assos a few months ago. Lovely position, rooms on the top floor with the verandah have the nicest view. Not cheap, though, at 70YTL for a single room B&B.
The temple of Athena there is a must-see.

we too stayed at the Yildiz back in Feb of 2007....I think I brought it to the attention of the other members as well at that time....I also vote for Assos....there did not seem to be much hotels or places around Bergama ( mind you we did not look to hard ) if you do go to Bergama...you will need close to a full day there to see everything...we only saw the Arcropolis...and missed the Red castle, museum and also the middle ruins...will have to go back for more :=))

Bergama ruins ...

Thought this was the best thread just to ask a small question. Why do all my maps call Bafa Golu Camaci Golu???????????? note that there is a village of that name close by.

Not long now till we are on the road again and I've just got a bit of fine tuning to do with the itinerary, but basically all as originally planned.

Urgent questions re potential visits to Bafa Gölü

Post by Pearl » Fri May 16, 2008 4:45 pm

Hi Everyone,

We are leaving for Turkey next Wed. and would love to hear your thoughts on our planned itinerary around Ephesus below. We have a very tight schedule: arriving at Sirince for our hotel on the late afternoon of May 22 and then must get to Izmir airport no later than 1:30 p.m. on May 24. Given this schedule, we would like to know if it is possible to (a) do a day hiking trip to Lake Bafa (if possible, we would like to climb Mt. Latmos to see some monastery ruins, Crusaders castles and cave paintings) on May 23 and return to Sirince for the night, and (b) on May 24, arise bright and early and tour Ephesus ruins within four hours before headed to Izmir airport. Or, is it more worthwhile to visit Pirine and Didyma on May 23 instead? We will be driving a rental car. If we could go hiking in Lake Bafa/Mt. Latmos, is it advisable for us to hire a guide, or are the roads/trails/sites clearly marked so we could manage on ourselves? Is it safe to drive in the early evenings, e.g., after 6 p.m.? Does anybody know when Ephesus ruins are open for visitors?

Thank you so much in advance for all your help.

Pearl

Another pension at Lake Bafa: The Pelikan.

I see it's biker-friendly.

I had a very pleasant 3 nights staying at the Kaşıkçı Pansiyon in Gölyaka village at Lake Bafa. Mustafa Kaşıkçı is a good host, and his cousin, Yusuf Özel, guided me to the various sights in the area.
It's pretty basic - two rooms on the roof of his restaurant. Nice view from the roof.

Also biker-friendly.
