Comments and recommendations for Istanbul restaurants

Way back in 1999 a taxi driver took me and some friends to a rowdy, fun local restaurant somewhere outside of the city center. At one point a belly dancer came in and made the rounds of the tables -- some people got up to join her, and in the end we were dancing and stomping on plates (with the taxi driver!!). I tried to find a place like that when I was in Istanbul last October but was told that belly dancers are considered "bad" or that I could go see a Floor Show for a whole evening of "traditional Turkish entertainment." Does anybody know of a place where belly dancers make an appearance? Has this been banished because of "morality"??
