A big thumbs-up to the Çarşı Balık Lokanta next to the Beşiktaş Fish Market in Istanbul, an unpretentious place (bare wood tables with paper place-mats) where the accent is on the food, not the decor. Although there is a menu, the waiter will bring to your table a tray containing all the available types of fish, to help you make your choice. We paid 36 YTL for a meal for two consisting of fish soup, grilled mackerel, salad, toast, bread, water and tea. With a television above the door, it's not fine dining (further up the Bosphorus is probably a better bet for that) but the food was top quality. There are several similar establishments on the same (pedestrianised) street and they all put tables outside when the weather permits. I wish we had places like this in England.
