Paradise Lost: Smyrna 1922, By Giles Milton

Just finished this book. Given it's subject matter it's not an uplifting book, but I found it to be engrossing and excellent.

It seemed to me (and I know that I don't know) balanced and well researched and based on first hand accounts. I'd be interested to learn what reception it received in Turkey?

I've read this too. I had no idea that there were any British merchant "dynasties" in Izmir. I found the book very interesting, but I had better not say too much about the politics in which the dramatis personae were enmeshed, as this is a travel forum.
