Female Traveling Turkey Solo...then moving to Bursa

Post by janbanan » Wed Jun 24, 2009 1:30 am

Hi there,
I'm a 22 year old female moving from the States to teach English in Bursa.

I'm wanting to take a 2 week tour of Turkey before I start my job in August and have a few questions about traveling alone. I've noticed that most of the package tours are for groups and typically have only a couple launch dates. I really would like to see Istanbul, Ephesus, and Cappidocia/Konya but am not sure how to go about it as a lone female traveler.

What are the best/safest/budget friendly ways to go about seeing the sights?

Also, has anyone spent time in Bursa. I know a little bit about the city but would really appreciate any tips or observations from people who have been there. From my research it seems like a lovely city, but I'm nervous none-the-less about what it will really be like to live in Bursa. Any general comments about moving abroad to Turkey in general would also be appreciated.

Thank you all!

Jana

You'll be fine, lots of women travel solo. The budget transport in Turkey is bus - they go everywhere (several times a day).
Say, 4 nights in Istanbul, 2 nights in Selçuk for Ephesus, 1 night in Pamukkale, 1 night Konya (maybe skip this unless you're really keen on seeing the Mevlana museum), 4 nights Göreme (Cappadocia) - that's almost a fortnight.

Sorry, I don't know anything about Bursa, I just rode through it once.

Good news!
My best friend lives in Bursa and his wife Rebecca is originally from the USA.
She's also teaching English.
She may be a good guide for you.
I can ask her if you can contact her directly; you know I don't want to say anything certain on behalf of her.
Feel free to write me directly: serdemhatir@hotmail.com
Come whoever you are...
just come as you are
