bus travel

Post by dc44120 » Thu Nov 19, 2009 12:06 am

Hi all,

I am planning to go to Armenia at first and then taking a bus from Armenia to Turkey. Could I get the Visa to Turkey at the border of Armenia and Turkey? Does anyone know if it is ok for US citizens to travel from Armenia to Turkey without any difficulty?

many thanks, DC

The Turkey-Armenia border was closed in 1993 and is still closed, as far as I am aware. I reckon you would have to go Armenia-Georgia-Turkey.

I assume there are some buses from Armenia to Georgia, but I don't have any details. A website I visited claims that there is a train every other day from Erevan to Tbilisi, but I can't confirm this.
A website I visited says there aren't any direct buses from Georgia to Kars, but I don't know if this is true.
With my own eyes I have seen buses that run from Georgia to Istanbul. You could get on one of these at Tbilisi or Batumi.
Turkey and Armenia are now talking to each other about various issues, so the border might reopen soon, but you can't rely on it.
I have read that US citizens don't need a visa for Georgia.

HI, Thanks for all the details. Do you mind in sharing or updating me if the border of Armenia and Turkey reopen? or you could refer me the websites that I could access the infos before my travel plans. Many thanks. p.s. is it safe for single woman travel in Georgia? I do not speak the local languages!

Hello again.

I don't know much about the countries of the Caucasus. I haven't been to any of them. The websites I visited may or may not be well informed. If I were you, I would look for an Internet forum that specialises in Armenia, Georgia or the Caucasus as a whole.

You can catch a bus from Kars to Georgia - I was there (Kars) in March 2009 and people from our hotel were going to catch the 8am bus to Georgia.
