They’ve Seen It All
In the center of Istanbul‘s Byzantine Hippodrome stands a tall Egyptian granite obelisk carved during the reign of Pharaoh Thutmose III (1504-1450 BC).
It was brought to Constantinople and erected here by Emperor Theodosius in 390 AD, almost two millennia after it had been carved.
Theodosius installed the obelisk on a marble base carved with figures of himself and his family as they watched events in the Hippodrome.
If only these stone eyes could have seen what has happened in the imperial city in the 1600+ years since then….
