Mini-Parthenon
You’ve seen photos of the Parthenon on the Acropolis in Athens. Well, this photo of the Temple of Zeus at Aizanoi, a ruined Roman city near Kütahya, gives you a better idea of ancient temple’s design.
The lofty columns, which we think of as the main feature of a classical temple, just held up a porch around the central structure, a stone rectangle called the cella, which held the cult statue of a god or goddess.
But lesson or not, temple or not, I like this photo because the three cute school girls allowed me to include them in it.
Imagine going to school, studying classical architecture, then passing the Temple of Zeus on your way home from school….
