Typical Turkish Village
Karacaören, a typical village in Western Turkey.
Driving north from Egirdir to Istanbul one evening I came over a hill and saw this scene: the late afternoon sun picking out the roofs of a few houses, the mosque and its minaret. Beyond the village opened a broad valley bisected by an arrow-straight road heading into the distance toward and endless succession of rounded mountains.
Inland western Turkey, often included in the Aegean region even though much of it is closer to the Mediterranean, is such a land: fertile and friendly. Few foreign visitors bother to travel here, therefore missing quiet scenes such as this.
