Fragrant Work
In the craggy limestone mountains south of Fethiye and Ölüdeniz, on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast, there grows a rare species of sage found only in a few places in the world.
It grows in abundance here and is gathered by local families, tied into “wands,” and exported for use by those who value its delicate scent as fumigant and incense.
The work, organized by the Tohum Eco-Center, brings much-needed income to local families, and carries a very common local product to places where it is rare and prized.
Above the family, note the abundant harvest of green grapes—even in June, when this photo was taken.
