Turtle Beach
İztuzu Beach, near Dalyan, on the Turkish Mediterranean coast, was discovered by loggerhead turtles (carretta carretta) thousands of years ago and, more recently, by Turkish and foreign vacationers.
The turtles come to make their nests and lay their eggs. The holiday-makers come to warm their bodies in the sun, cool them in the surf, and show them to the world (for better or worse).
Luckily, it is one of those Turkish beaches that’s plenty big enough to handle hundreds of visitors, not to mention thousands of turtles–although the two groups of visitors are not completely compatible. Even though protected by law, the turtles have suffered disruption (mostly unintentional) in recent years, and ever fewer now come to visit.
As for you, when you visit it’s easy to get away from the crowds by simply walking westward for five minutes, although this also takes you farther from the shade of trees.
