More Leather than Fur

Perhaps because fur is so valuable, this section of Istanbul‘s Grand Bazaarwas set off by itself and could be closed off tight from the rest of the bazaar. The shops—and shoppers—look more upscale.

When you go shopping here, you’ll find some fur, but more leather apparel: coats, jackets, vests, skirts, dresses, accessories.

The shops are patronized mostly by Istanbul people, but also by visitors, who travel to Turkey for the reasonable prices.

Remember: on the Muslim holy-day of Kurban Bayramı (“Sacrifice Holiday”) over a million sheep are offered to God in imitation of Abraham’s sacrifice of a sheep instead of his son Isaac.

You can make an awful lot of leather apparel out of a million sheepskins…
