Crescent and Star: Turkey Between Two Worlds, by Stephen Kinzer
Stephen Kinzer was the New York Times bureau chief in Turkey for years when I was running around Turkey writing travel guidebooks. He wrote a lot of good travel articles, but his main task was to monitor the political and social situation, and report knowledgeably when needed.
All that time he was also gathering good information and background for this examination of present-day Turkey’s political and social situation, and for his speculations about the country’s future. His insights are trenchant and valuable, his writing accessible, as a veteran journalists’ should be. Worth reading.
