Restored Houses in Alsancak, Izmir, Aegean Turkey

Strolling Street

Alsancak (AHL-sahn-jahk) is one if Izmir‘s toniest districts, the area at the northern “point” of the city just by the entrance to the harbor.

Some of its Ottoman-era houses have survived the great firethat raged through the city during the last battle of the War of Independence. Many houses have been restored, and some converted to public uses such as cafés, restaurants and boutiques.

Not many tourists see this part of Izmir on their trip to Turkey, which is precisely why I recommend that you take an hour and explore Alsancak’s pretty back streets.
