How can Dalbastı (“It Broke My Back”) Sokak account for its wretched name?
It’s a short, level Sultanahmet street that starts just across from Istanbul‘s Blue Mosque, runs for one very short block, then turns a corner to the left and becomes pleasant, hotel-rich Kutlugün Sokak.
Actually, the meaning of “Dalbasti” is more “It Irritates Me.” (Could it be from the relatively mellow touts at the short street’s one small carpet shop?)
In any case, it’s a fine place to stay, pretty much built atop the ruins of Byzantium’s Magnaura Palace, and mere steps from the Blue Mosque and other major sights. as you can see from the map below.
