My short list of the best Istanbul hotels and apartments/flats is based on personal experience, on-site inspections, and reports from many TurkeyTravelPlanner.com travelers.
The Istanbul hotels listed below are in all price ranges and comfort levels (Deluxe 5-Star, Boutique 5-Star, Ottoman Inns, Comfy 4-Star, Thrifty 2- & 3-Star, Budget, Apartments/ Flats, Hostels), but all offer convenient locations, good service, and value-for-money rates.
IMPORTANT NOTE: These hotels are among the most popular in Turkey, and are often fully booked, particularly for April-May and September-October. Reserve well in advance!
Boutique 5-Star
Superb in the art of hospitality, this top-rated Sirkeci Group boutique hotel (formerly called the Sirkeci Konak) has it all: convenient and quiet location for sightseeing, fine restaurants, many free activities for guests (tours, teatime, cooking classes, etc.), and an indoor swimming pool. More...
Opened in August 2015 in a beautifully-restored Ottoman-era building just around the corner from the Sirkeci Mansion Hotel, the Lalahan Hotel is the latest jewel in the crown of the Boyacı hotel family. More...
This family-run boutique inn is only a few minutes' stroll from the Hippodrome and Istanbul's major sights, but it's quiet and comfortable, offering an exceptionally warm welcome and fine views from the roof terrace. It has apartments/flats, too! More...
Exceptionally friendly and conscientious, the family-run Dersaadet is conveniently but quietly located just a few minutes' stroll from the Sultanahmet (Blue) Mosque and the Arasta Bazaar. Some rooms have private hamams (Turkish baths), and the roof terrace offers panoramic sea views along with an excellent breakfast. More...
Near the Sultanahmet (Blue) Mosque but on a quiet street with a secret garden at the back, the Tashkonak has a variety of rooms for 1, 2, 3 or more guests, friendly service, and moderate rates. More...
Perhaps the top hotel in the entire city, it has the most convenient location for sightseeing, and a staff of 200 to serve 130 guests in 65 guest rooms. It is usually fully booked, so reserve early! More...
The first 5-star luxury hotel built in Istanbul, Hilton chose the prime location, with spacious grounds, fine outdoor swimming pool, and spectacular panoramic views, yet you can walk in minutes to Taksim Square and the delights and activities of Beyoğlu and the upscale boutiques of Nişantaşı. More...
Built to receive the pampered passengers arriving on the Orient Express, the Pera Palace has been completely renovated, its systems modernized, yet its 19th-century Ottoman Orientalist charm preserved. Managed by Jumeirah, it offers a premium nostalgic experience in the heart of Beyoğlu. More...
Those wanting to be at the center of sightseeing can do no better: the Sultanahmet (Blue) Mosque is literally right across the street. Dine in the rooftop restaurant and you'll feel you can almost touch it (look at these photos!) Very friendly, efficient staff and service add to its appeal. More...
Family-run with super-friendly staff, beautifully renovated guest rooms, sea and city views from the modern roof terrace (where a fine buffet breakfast is served), the Niles is only a few minutes' stroll from the Grand Bazaar, and about 10 minutes' walk (and less by tram) along historic Divan Yolu from the Hippodrome. More...
Good location a short walk from the Sultanahmet (Blue) Mosque, friendly staff, old-time Ottoman atmosphere and comfortable facilities at value-for-money rates, the Sultan's Inn is part of Fatih Seyahat, the same company that operates the excellent airport transfer service. More...
Another Fatih Seyahat hotel near the aforementioned Sultan's Inn, Deniz Houses is in two buildings on a quiet, little-trafficked street, with comfortable rooms, roof terraces with good sea views, welcoming, informative staff, and particularly advantageous rates. More...
The İlkay offers great prices for the comfort and convenience you receive. Adjoining the hotel is my favorite Sirkeci hangout, the Red River Pub. You may see me there. More...
Would you believe me if I said that you could sleep right in the walls of old Byzantium? Here you can! This tiny place is built right into the city walls in a quiet, real Istanbul neighborhood not far from the Hippodrome and the Blue Mosque. Small, friendly, comfy, it really does feel like Your House in Istanbul. More...
A small, super-friendly hotel with spectacular views of Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the Bosphorus, and the Sea of Marmara, at some of the best rates in Istanbul? That would be the Terrace Guesthouse, right across the street from the renowned Four Seasons Hotel, but with far better views than at that ultra-deluxe 5-star. More...
Two minutes' stroll from the Hippodrome (if you're a slow walker), this friendly, family-run hotel has comfortable hotel rooms with all services, a super-thrifty hostel section with tidy dorms, and a comfortable roof terrace with good views. Best rates in town! More...
A historic 1875 Beyoğlu building near Tünel Square beautifully restored and converted to comfortable, modern, stylish serviced apartments/flats with all the conveniences, giving you the comfort of a hotel and the independence of a private apartment...and some of the flats can sleep 6 to 8 people. More...

Istanbul's hostels—no longer just for youth—compete with budget hotels when it comes to services. Hostelbookers is the best way to find dorm bed and room rates and availability:
